Creating Something More than Memories: Art Activity

One of our options for Afternoon Activities at Wyoming Seminary’s English Language Institute is Art. The art classroom is in Nesbitt Hall, which is also where STEM classes meet for afternoon classes.

Walking into the classroom, you can find numerous art materials in this tranquil, warm room. This will be the place for students to spend their activity time and seek out their art potential, as well as their inner peace.

In the art activity, you will meet a good-tempered lady; we call her Ms. Denise. She appreciates all the work her students create. Carving, painting on canvas, drawing with watercolors, and other attractive artworks are created here. After finishing them, we stick them on walls in the classroom so other students can see them, or we bring them back and decorate our dorm rooms.

For instance, last week we made slime. There were two containers with letters A and B on each of them. Container A had a solution which consisted of water and glue mixed together. In solution B, there was some mixed liquid that didn’t smell pleasant.

When I walked into the room and sat down at my table, I stared at them and wondered what was going to happen. What could we do with those smelly sticky liquids? My roommate even joked that we were going to eat the solutions. A bunch of possible answers appeared in our minds. Trying to figure out what to do, we looked at our teacher, Ms. Denise, and expected that she would give the answer. However, she joked that she had “Miranda rights” which means she can keep silent. It seemed like she was waiting for someone to come up with inferences. After a while, students couldn’t wait to have the answer.

Finally, Ms. Denise told us that we were going to make the slime by ourselves. None of my classmates had done that before, so we were interested and excited. Ms. Denise gave us a sheet that showed steps and let us create the slime on our own. With the instructions from the teacher, we mixed solutions step by step, added our favorite colors in the blended liquid, and finally we finished the process.

Everyone seemed careful and paid a lot of attention during the process. The slime we made was wet and shapeless at first, but as we kneaded it many times, it became like the exact slime that we bought from the mall in King of Prussia. We felt so happy about our success and enjoyed playing with the colorful slime for the rest of the day.

I have included some pictures from the day we created the slime below:

From the art activity, you learn not only skills for art but also pure happiness, mental peace, and a moment of being relaxed, along with the feeling that we all express ourselves in different ways.
